
'Perfume: The Story of a Murderer' topped the 12th o'seas outing of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' sequel.
German thriller "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" has eclipsed the buccaneers, easily beating "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" as the top film at the international box office.
Figures released Monday by Summit/Constantin showed "Perfume" with $11.3 million at 1,300 playdates in five markets for the weekend, topping the 12th frame of "Dead Man's Chest" by 35%.
Top performance for the adaptation of the Patrick Suskind bestseller came from its second stanza in Germany, with $6.7 million for 51% of the market, and from the Commonwealth of Independent States, with $2.05 million.
"Perfume" has cumed $31.8 million, including $20.1 million in Germany, $6.1 million in the CIS, $2.7 million in Austria, $1.6 million in Italy and $1.4 million in Switzerland. It opens Oct. 4 in France, Nov. 24 in Spain, Dec. 8 in the U.K. and Dec. 27 in the U.S.
BVI's "Pirates" sequel, which had won 10 of the 11 previous frames overseas, grossed $7.3 million at 4,387 engagements, to lead Hollywood pics and hoist its foreign cume to $625.3 million.
Another local pic, gangster comedy "Marrying the Mafia 3," launched solidly in South Korea with $7.3 million at 500 engagements, including previews. UIP's "World Trade Center" followed with $6.2 million at 1,135 in 10 markets for a cume of $8.2 million.
