Brazil takes 'Aspirin' for Oscar race

Pic chosen from 14 possibles

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Helmer Marcelo Gomes' debut pic "Cinema, aspirinas e urubus" (Movies, Aspirin and Vultures) is Brazil's entry for consideration for foreign-language film Oscar.

A commission of film industry representatives, appointed by the Ministry of Culture, chose the pic from 14 possibles.

It took Gomes seven years to raise the funds and produce "Aspirin," a road movie set in 1942 based on the life story of Gomes' uncle.

The feature had a strong start on the fest circuit, which included a screening in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section in 2005.
