DreamWorks Animation is developing a CGI feature based on the classic time-traveling duo, with helmer Rob Minkoff onboard to direct.
The bespectacled dog Mr. Peabody and his adopted pet boy Sherman were introduced in 1959 in a series of short segments as part of "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show." Together, they had more than 90 adventures, jumping into Peabody's "WABAC Machine" to travel back in time.
Minkoff developed the pitch for the film with longtime producing partner Jason Clark; the duo will oversee development.
Andrew Kurtzman will write the screenplay.
DreamWorks Animation executive Chris Kuser shepherded the deal. Bullwinkle Studios' Tiffany Ward, daughter of the original toon's late producer Jay Ward, and Classic Media's Eric Ellenbogen will executive produce the project.
No release date is set for the pic.
"One of the most gratifying relationships in my 20-plus-year career of making animated movies has been that of working with Rob Minkoff on 'The Lion King,' " Katzenberg said. "I've waited more than a decade to have an opportunity to work with him again."
Minkoff also helmed pics "Stuart Little," "Stuart Little 2" and "The Haunted Mansion." Kurtzman's credits include "Down Periscope," "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" and "Camp Nowhere."
