'Father' finds way to Sony

Firth, Broadbent will star in pic

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American and Latin American rights to helmer Anand Tucker's "And When Did You Last See Your Father?"

Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent will star in the film, based on British author Blake Morrison's memoir of his relationship with his dying father. Scribe David Nicholls adapted for the bigscreen, with Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen at Number 9 Films producing.

Tucker ("Shopgirl," "Hilary and Jackie") is set to begin shooting in the U.K. next month.

Project was developed as part of the U.K. Film Council's Super-Slate initiative, in association with Film4, Intandem Films and the Irish Film Board.

Buena Vista Intl. will release the film in the U.K. next year, followed by a U.S. bow.

Acquisition reunites Sony Classics with Number 9 and Intandem. Most recently, Sony Classics distribbed Number 9's "Breakfast on Pluto" in the U.S.

Woolley said Number 9 and Intandem will work closely with Sony Classics on its marketing plans for the U.S. and South America.
