Warner Bros. joins 'Bucket' brigade

Nicholson, Freeman committed to Reiner pic

Warner Bros. has committed to finance and distribute "The Bucket List," closing deals with Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman and director Rob Reiner for a late October production start.

Nicholson and Freeman will play two men who break out of a ward for terminal cancer patients and embark on a road trip, knocking items off a list of things they want to do before kicking the bucket. Justin Zackham penned the script.

The director and stars sparked to the project this summer (Daily Variety, June 29).

Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Alan Greisman and Reiner will produce, with Zackham and Travis Knox exec producing.

Project came together very quickly, with Zadan/Meron Prods. submitting it to Reiner, who signed on and sent it to Freeman. Freeman then suggested Nicholson as his ideal road trip partner and Reiner courted him.

Freeman, who last worked for WB on "Million Dollar Baby" and "Batman Begins," most recently starred in the Brad Silberling-directed "10 Items or Less." Nicholson just completed for WB the Martin Scorsese-directed drama "The Departed," a remake of "Infernal Affairs" in which Nicholson plays a mob boss.
