Disney pic stays on top over holiday weekend

'Invincible'

Disney's 'Invincible,' starring Greg Kinnear, was No. 1 at the box office for a second straight weekend.

"Invincible" still can't be beat.

Disney's sports drama declined a modest 30% and held onto the no. 1 spot for the second weekend in a row, as wide openers "Crank" and "The Wicker Man" both failed to outperform modest expectations.

Two Sundance favorites were the only pics that particularly impressed this frame, as both "The Illusionist" and "Little Miss Sunshine" made it into the top five.

Those pics, along with a healthy group of holdovers, helped the overall frame shoot up 10% from Labor Day weekend a year ago, according to Nielsen EDI.

Mark Wahlberg starrer "Invincible" grossed $13 million for four days and $10.3 million over three days, giving it a per play average of $4,075 at 2,921 theaters for the 3 day weekend. Cume is $37.8 million.

Lionsgate's low budget actioner "Crank" drew a primarily young male aud to gross a solid $13 million over the full frame and $10.3 million through Sunday, giving it a three day average of $4,095 per play at 2,515 locations.

Horror remake "The Wicker Man," which Warner Bros. distribbed for Alcon Entertainment, came in third for the weekend, grossing a so-so $11.7 million in four days and $9.6 million through Sunday.

Sony opened its African-American targeted basketball pic Crossover at 1,023 theaters and grossed just $4.5 million over four days and $3.8 million through Sunday. Three-day average take was $3,666.

Yari Film Group had a very successful expansion of "The Illusionist" on its third weekend, taking the period romance from 144 to 971 playdates and grossing $8 million over four days and $6.4 million in three. Cume is now $12.1 million.

Indie is planning to take the Edward Norton starrer to around 1,400 theaters on Friday.

Fox Searchlight "Little Miss Sunshine" a bump from 1,430 to 1,620 plays on its sixth weekend and saw the 3 day gross actually rise by 3% to $7.6 million. Four day take was $9.7 million, bringing the Sundance acquisition's cume up to an impressive $35.8 million.

Thanks to bigger Sunday night shows due to the Labor Day holiday, drops for most pics were smaller than on a typical weekend.

In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics expanded its thriller "The Quiet" from seven to 366 plays on its second frame but grossed only $258,812. Three day take was $194,812, giving it an average of just $532. Cume is $301,866.Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films bowed the latest incarnation of "Lassie" at 170 theaters. Pic played predominantly matinees and grossed $340,340 in four days and $255,340 in three, giving it a three day average of $1,502.

IFC's controversial docu "This Film is Not Yet Rated" opened to a strong $41,664 at two theaters in four days and $30,664 over three days, giving it a three-day average of $15,332.

Indie expanded its "Factotum" from 31 to 48 theaters on its third weekend and grossed a soft $198,565 for the frame and $148,565 in three days, giving it a three day average of $3,095 and bringing the Matt Dillon starrer's cume to $455,952.

In its third frame, Fox Searchlight's "Trust the Man" grew from 158 to 260 playdates and continued to do weak business, grossing $465,000 for the frame and $365,000 in three days, giving it a per play average over three days of $1,403 and bringing its cume to just over $1 million.

"Half Nelson" expanded from 21 to 36 theaters on its fourth weekend and grossed a decent $316,943 in four days and $246,897 through Sunday, giving is a three day per play take of $6,858. ThinkFilm's Sundance pickup has cumed $807,420.

Long running indie "Boynton Beach Club" broke the $2 million mark on its 25th weekend. Senior citizen romantic comedy grossed $307,818 in four days and $233,352 in three, giving it an average gross of $3,704 at 63 locations. Cume is $2.2 million.
