Wowow pacts with Sky on channel

Deal is subject to board approval

Japan's first commercial satcaster Wowow has reached a tentative agreement with rival Sky Perfect Communications to launch a channel on Sky PerfecTV! satellite and cable platform, possibly by the end of the year.

Deal is subject to board approval and must be greenlit by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Wowow, which broadcasts its 24-hour entertainment channel to 2.3 million digital and analog subs, has been struggling to raise numbers. Sky Perfect has 3 million subs.

But both are facing growing competition from GyaO and other Webcasters that offer cheap menus of music clips, TV shows and features.

Launched in 1984, Wowow skeds sports, music, drama and pics from Hollywood and elsewhere.
