Woman, son convicted of piracy

World Brief

A woman and her son were convicted Monday of running one of Hong Kong's biggest piracy rings.

Widow Wong King-fa and her son, Chong Chun-sang, were sentenced to 55 months and 37 and a half months, respectively. A third, Huang Jinhua, from mainland China was found guilty in absentia and sentenced to 33 months.

The three had their sentences extended by 25% after the judge applied the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance for the first time.

The trio was behind a $3.5 million operation described as one of the biggest pirated disc manufacturing set-ups discovered in the city. Pirated goods seized during a raid at their home, three warehouses and eight shops in 2004 included video and music CDs as well as computer software and games.
