Movie theater revenue climbed 16.6% between 2003-04 and 2004-05 to C$446.3 million ($401.7 million), according to data from the film distribution and video wholesaling industry compiled by national statistical agency Statistics Canada.
Out-of-home movie attendance climbed last year as well, thanks mainly to a 20.4% rise in drive-in theater auds to 1.8 million, after eight years of decline.
Households north of the border spent $101 going to the cinema last year, up from $95 per household the previous year.
Still, there's no reason for exhibitors to sit on their laurels. Revenue from DVD and video sales has leveled off at $1.6 billion, some 51% of the $3.15 billion in total revenue of film and video distributors.
DVD sales account for 77% of the video wholesaling market, up from 71% the previous year.
Conventional TV revenue slipped 6.7% to $364 million, while pay TV revenue is the fastest-growing segment in the industry, climbing 27.5% to $121 million.
