Mandate counting on '27'

Studios gets hands on Thonson thriller

Mandate Pictures has acquired the rights to "27 Times," a dark, super-natural thriller scripted by Thomas Thonson.

Story follows a paranoid, overprotective young man caring for his shut-in teenage brother, who is tortured by precognitive visions of violent deaths. He profits off his brother's terrible gift, until they are confronted by the brutal deaths in their wake.

Pic will be produced by Mandate prexy of motion pictures Nathan Kahane, prexy Joe Drake and Drew Crevello. Mary Lee oversees the project, the first film that former Mandate development VP Crevello will produce under his new, yet-to-be-named, first-look deal with the company.

Thonson also wrote the suburban teen drama "Rockwell," currently in development at Senator Films.

Mandate is in post-production on Marc Forster's "Stranger Than Fiction" for Sony, as well as the supernatural thriller "Passengers." Also on the company's slate are "Juno" and "Strangers" for Universal and Vertigo Entertainment.
