"Jesus Christ Superstar," starring Ted Neeley, Yvonne Elliman, Ben Vereen and Jack Black at the Ricardo Montalban Theater. Sunday, Aug. 13, 8 p.m., $110-$520; youtheatreamerica.tix.com

For a one-night benefit performance of "Jesus Christ Superstar," YouTHeatre-America artistic director Jack Nakano thought former student Jack Black would be the big draw as King Herod.

And then he heard about TedHeads, a global fan club dedicated to Ted Neeley, who originated the role of Jesus Christ on Broadway and in Norman Jewison's 1973 film.

"The first clue was when I got a ticket order from Ohio," says Nakano, who convinced Andrew Lloyd Webber to let him stage the musical for a reduced royalty: $1.

The performance benefits Nakano's theater, which aims to develop "critical audiences." Says Nakano: "We already have 40,000 highly trained professionals parking cars and waiting tables."

Even so, former YouTHeatre members include Nicolas Cage, Anthony Edwards and, of course, Black. "Yeah," Nakano says, "I guess he's pretty popular now."
