The other jury members are Danish helmer Lone Scherfig ("Italian for Beginners"), Scottish director Michael Caton-Jones ("Shooting Dogs"), Irish novelist John Banville ("The Sea") and U.S. rocker Chrissie Hynde.
The award, sponsored by the U.K. Film Council, is given to the best new British feature in the fest.
"One of the best parts of Edinburgh is discovering new talent," said Paul Trijbits, outgoing head of the U.K. Film Council's New Cinema Fund. "Gavin Hood's 'Tsotsi,' winner of last year's Michael Powell award, was discovered by (Edinburgh) audiences before going on to win the Oscar for foreign language film."
This year's EIFF is giving world premieres to 10 pics: Douglas Mackinnon's opener "The Flying Scotsman," James Marquand's "Dead Man's Cards," Andrew Piddington's "The Killing of John Lennon," Richard Laxton's "Life and Lyrics," Paul Andrew Williams' "London to Brighton," Col Spector's "Someone Else," Oliver Rihs' "Black Sheep," Simone Van Dusseldorp's "Deep," Guy Moshe's "Holly" and Xiaolu Guo's "How is Your Fish Today?"
Fest, which runsAug. 14-27, also is introducing a new award for best doc.
