Cathy Konrad and Mangold are producing the pic, which Sony had put into turnaround (Daily Variety, June 22).
Remake is aiming for a fall start. Crowe would play a desperado caught by a local sheriff determined to transport him to captivity; the villain's accomplices stage an ambush. Columbia adapted an Elmore Leonard short story to make the 1957 original pic, which starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin. Stuart Beattie, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas wrote the script.
Pic, Mangold and Konrad's follow-up to "Walk the Line," originally had Tom Cruise in its crosshairs. Crowe stepped up after falling out of Baz Luhrmann's next film. Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity will pick up the project as a one-off and not as part of Gun Hill Road, a hedge fund-backed company that will sink $400 million to co-finance a slate of films at Sony.
