Delfino, a movie- and TV-distribution company, has set up an animation division to produce the pilot of "Eddie & the Squid," which cost just under $1 million.
The developers of "Squid" are Don Ashley, head of Delfino; Rick Nyholm, exec producer of ABC's "The George Lopez Show"; and Brett Merhar, who created the characters. The actors Efren Ramirez ("Napoleon Dynamite") and Carlos Alazraqui ("Reno 911") will voice the two main characters
Delfino will pitch the pilot to the Fox Network as a possible addition to its Sunday-primetime lineup with "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy." Ashley said Delfino has developed new technology in hand-drawn animation that allows the animators to put together a half-hour episode in as little as eight weeks.
Ashley said Delfino's goal is to produce four more animated pilots in the next year.
