The original film, starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, was released in 1956 by Fox. A deal is being negotiated with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization for rights to use the music and lyrics the duo wrote for the 1945 stage musical.
Jackman would play Billy Bigelow, a carnival barker whose temper puts him in the middle of a botched robbery and leads to his death. Stuck in purgatory, he's given one day to return and fix the problems he left behind -- namely a teenager who has a lot of his rebellious traits.
Jackman is well acquainted with the role, having sung Billy in a 2002 Carnegie Hall concert to honor Rodgers & Hammerstein. "Carousel" was last revived on Broadway in 1994 in a Tony-winning run.
While Jackman has a Disney deal to develop musicals, Fox had the inside track on "Carousel" because the studio owns the rights.
Seed has an overall first-look deal at Fox, where it is developing the "X-Men" spinoff "Wolverine" from a David Benioff script; Jackman will star.
Jackman and Palermo are in Sydney opening an office to hatch modestly budgeted Fox-financed productions in Australia. Jackman starts a "Boy From Oz" run there Thursday.
Jackman's currently onscreen in Woody Allen's "Scoop." His next pic will be independently financed drama "The Tourist," produced by Seed. He's also set to star with Nicole Kidman next year in Baz Luhrmann's untitled Fox musical. He stars in Chris Nolan's "The Prestige" which Disney releases in October in in Warner Bros.' "The Fountain," directed by Darren Aronofsky, due Nov. 22.
