Top prize went to Egyptian blockbuster "The Yacoubian Building," by helmer Marwan Hamed. Pic also took home acting prizes for its three male leads, Adel Imam, Khaled El Sawy and Nour El Sherif.
Other winners included a special jury prize for Iraqi helmer Mohammad Al-Daradji's "Ahlaam," and actress prize was shared between Rabia Ben Abdallah, Mariola Fuentes and Rachida Brakni for their perfs in "Fleur d'oubli," "Juanita de Tangier" and "Barakat," respectively.
Lebanese helmer Philippe Aracktingi won for first feature with "Bosta." Aracktingi arrived at the fest late after being evacuated from the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon on a French government ship.
Violence in Lebanon and Gaza resulted in a downbeat event.
Many of the Lebanese helmers and journos were unable to attend, while the deteriorating situation in Lebanon dominated conversations.
Fest organizers screened specially commissioned short films by Lebanese helmers that were made under fire and sent digitally throughout the weeklong event.
Lebanese helmer Mai Masri, who took home the documentary grand prize for her "Beirut: Truth, Lies and Videotape," added half an hour of footage newly shot since hostilities began and added it to final print, which arrived from Lebanon hours before its screening.
