Shingle boards 'Funny Games' remake

By ED MEZA

BERLIN -- Germany's X Filme has set up a shingle to increase international production, and has boarded Celluloid Dreams' remake of Michael Haneke's "Funny Games" starring Naomi Watts.

Pic, about a family terrorized by two men while on vacation, will be the first project from the new X Filme Intl. division.

"We have strong partnerships with producers, world sales companies and screenplay writers from around the world, which we would like to build on," said X Filme producer Andro Steinborn, who will head the new company.

Steinborn produced Bille August's "Goodbye Bafana" and Ol Parker's "Imagine Me & You."

Employing a long-term unspecified credit line from Germany's Commerzbank, the shingle will co-produce one or two international projects a year budgeted at $6 million-$12 million, providing gap financing of well over 20%.

X Filme Intl. will be based in the Lower Saxony city of Wolfsburg and not in Berlin, where X Filme is headquartered. The credit line was only possible thanks to a security guarantee from the Lower Saxony government, which is eager to boost support for the state's film and TV industry.

"Funny Games," set to start shooting in New York in September, is co-produced by Celluloid Dreams and the U.K.'s Tartan Films and Halcyon Pictures.
