Helmer dashes to 'Runnin''

Dito Montiel has been tapped to rewrite and direct Paramount Pictures' "Runnin' " for studio-based Kevin Misher.

Set in New York, the story centers on the underground world of sports betting. Misher is producing with his company's Patrick Baker overseeing. Robert Munic wrote the original version of the script, which Montiel will now retool.

Project is expected to be the follow-up to his directorial debut, "A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints," which nabbed the directing prize and a special jury prize for best ensemble performance at the Sundance Film Festival.

"Saints" will play at the Venice Film Festival before it hit screens in the U.S. courtesy of First Look Media in September. Pic is based on Montiel's first novel of the same name. His second tome, "Clapper," is due this fall and is about the life of a professional audience clapper.
