U, Shadyac have a 'Ball'

Pair create 'Magic' together

Tom Shadyac and Universal have picked up "Magic 8 Ball," a high-concept laffer pitch about the soothsaying toy by Barry Blaustein and Jason Hefter, with an eye for Shadyac to helm.

Shadyac will produce through his Shady Acres shingle with partner Michael Bostick.

Blaustein's credits include writing "Coming to America" and "The Nutty Professor," as well as more recently helming and penning "The Ringer" and wrestling docu "Beyond the Mat." Hefter's credits include writing "Ultimate Rush" and "Assembly Required."

Shadyac is currently helming "Evan Almighty," the sequel to the Jim Carrey hit "Bruce Almighty." He's also producing "Accepted," which Universal will release Aug. 11, as well as "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" with Adam Sandler's Happy Madison.
