Romantic comedy starring telenovela thesp Barbara Mori falls under its joint venture with Jim McNamara's Panamax Films, which kicked off in mid-April with drama "La mujer de mi hermano," also starring Mori.
Shot in Chile by Chilean helmer/co-writer Claudio Dabed, new pic follows a beautiful woman who deliberately makes herself look ugly to ward off men and avoid more romantic disappointments.
"La mujer," which grossed $2.8 million, opened on more than 200 screens in nearly 20 markets -- one of the largest openings for a Spanish-language film aimed at U.S. Latino auds.
Lionsgate expects it to do better on DVD; it is shipping 70,000-100,000 units of the drama today.
"What the U.S. Latino market needs is consistency," said Arturo Chavez, Lionsgate's Spanish programming chief. "To this end, Lionsgate aims to release one (Latino-themed) film every quarter and supplement these with DVD releases of smaller titles."
It will release "Feliz Navidad" (Merry Christmas) on DVD in November, followed by Televisa-produced "Amar te duele" in December.
In January, Lionsgate releases the DVD of "El vacilon: The Movie," which the defunct U.S. distributor of Mexico's Televisa, Televisa Cine, released on the East Coast last December. Pic became a minor cult hit among followers of deejay Luis Jimenez and his radio show "El vacilon de la manana."
Both "Feliz Navidad" and "El vacilon" are directed by helmer-writer Agustin, who goes by only his first name.
In February, Lionsgate will release the DVD of Mexican-Anglo political thriller "Conejo en la luna," by helmer Jorge Ramirez-Suarez, followed by dark comedy "Matando cabos" in April.
