Magnolia drawn to toon

Distrib arm nabs CG feature

'The Hero of Color City'

Magnolia Pictures has drawn North American rights to Exodus’ animated crayon caper 'The Hero of Color City.'

Magnolia Pictures, the distribution arm of 2929 Entertainment, has picked up North American rights to Exodus Film Group's in-development CG-animated feature "The Hero of Color City."

Script by J.P. McCormick and Rich Raczelowski follows the adventures of a diverse band of crayons as they strive to protect their magical, multihued homeland from an evil tyrant. With various personalities, the crayons move between two worlds: the magical realm of Color City and the "real world" where they work at a preschool.

Headed by Eamonn Bowles, Magnolia sees its new CG pickup as a potential family franchise.

Magnolia -- which has rolled out such pics as "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" and Steven Soderbergh's "Bubble" -- has been bulking up a diversified slate. "Color City" comes on the heels of the unit's pickup of "Cocaine Cowboys," Billy Corben's docu about drug trafficking in 1980s Miami.

Max Howard is exec producing "Color City," with Exodus prexy John D. Eraklis serving as a producer.

Through its consumer products unit -- launched earlier this year, and headed by Bruce Auerbach -- Exodus will handle licensing on a line of "Color City" merchandise, art supplies and educational products.

Exodus' animation slate also includes "Bunyan & Babe," "Igor" and "Amarillo Armadillo."

Magnolia is in current release with "District B13," "The Lost City" and "Somersault."
