Helmer on 'Diva' duty

Zentelis to direct 'Detroit' laffer

Enid Zentelis has signed to direct the indie pic "Detroit Diva" -- a comedy following an awkward, unwitting blues sensation -- for the Robert Cort Co.

Penned by Stephanie Allen, project centers on a thirtysomething white woman who learns she has a talent for blues singing after she's forced to take over her family's rundown Detroit real estate biz.

Zentelis is overseeing a rewrite by Allen.

Helmer's previous credits include the 2004 Sundance pic "Evergreen," which was digitally distribbed via a pact with AMC theaters.

Director is also developing "Grasping the Sparrow's Tail," a mystery thriller about an internal bank investigator, for producer Bridget Johnson.

Cort Prods. slate also includes "Aftermath," the English-language debut of German filmmaker Caroline Link.
