Fiennes flies to 'Red Baron' role

Actor will play Canuck pilot who shot down German ace

By ED MEZA

Joseph Fiennes is going up against German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen in helmer-scribe Niki Muellerschoen's historical epic "The Red Baron."

Fiennes will play Roy Brown, the Canadian pilot credited with shooting down the Teutonic top gun in 1918 during the final months of World War I.

The English-language production, which recounts von Richthofen's career as World War I's most celebrated flyer, is shooting in Prague.

Produced by Dan Maag, Roland Pellegrino and Thomas Reisser's shingle, Niama Film, "The Red Baron" stars Matthias Schweighoefer as the titular hero, with Lena Headey ("The Brothers Grimm") as his love interest and Til Schweiger as Richthofen's flying buddy.

Budgeted at E18 million ($22.5 million), Niama is financing the pic via private investors and local film subsidies.

Maag describes the pic as more of a modern take on the legend of the Red Baron than a straight historical pic.

Fiennes next will be seen in Bille August's South African drama "Goodbye Bafana," an international co-production backed by Berlin-based X Filme.
