Disc's time is 'Now'

Compilation series continues winning streak

The 22nd volume of "Now That's What I Call Music" debuted at No. 1 on the nation's album sales chart, the eighth time the compilation series has debuted on top.

"Now Vol. 22," released by Columbia, sold 398,000 copies in the week ended Sunday, besting the first-week sales of the last two editions: "21" sold 334,000 in its first sesh in April; "20" sold 378,000 in November. The 20-track compilation includes hits by Rihanna, Chamillionaire, Three 6 Mafia, Teddy Geiger and KT Tunstall.

Hits package was one of four discs to debut in the top 10.

Radiohead singer Thom Yorke saw 90,000 copies of his solo debut "Eraser" (XL Recordings) go home with consumers. "Pimpalation," Houston rapper Pimp C's second album for Rap-a-Lot/Asylum, opened at No. 3 on sales of 87,000.

Warner rock act Muse's fourth album, "Black Holes and Revelations," is the band's first to chart in the top 100, opening at No. 9 on sales of 48,000.

"Day Has Come" (Epic), the debut of Cheyenne Kimball, winner of NBC's "America's Most Talented Kid" in 2003 and the star of MTV's "Cheyenne Show," sold 40,000 to open at No. 15. Rapper J.R. Writer, a member of the Diplomats, saw his solo debut, "History in the Making" (Koch), open at No. 25 on sales of 29,000.

Early November's soph effort "Mother Mechanic & the Path" (Drive Thru) sold 26,000 to open at No. 31. Seether's "One Cold Night," an acoustic live album on Wind-Up, debuted at No. 50 on sales of 17,000.

Other debuts included "Blue Collar" (J), from Kanye West associate Rhymefest, which sold 15,000 (No. 61); Sufjan Stevens' outtake collection "Avalanche" (Asthmatic Kitty), 14,000 (No. 71); and Arizona pop-rockers the Format's "Dog Problems" (Nettwerk), 11,000 (No. 84). Marc Anthony, who has twice been in the top 10, saw his compilation "Sigo Siendo Yo" debut at No. 110, selling 8,000 copies.

Not registering on the chart is Ziggy Marley's indie effort, being sold exclusively at Target. Released during the July 4 week, it sold 11,664 in its first week and 5,000 this past week to post a cume of 22,000.

Last week's No. 1, Johnny Cash's "American V," dropped to No. 6 on sales of 54,000.
