Series premiere for Sci Fi Channel's 'Eureka' was the top show on cable Tuesday night in several demos.

Sci Fi Channel's "Eureka" has struck ratings gold.

Two-hour Tuesday-night premiere was the highest-rated series telecast in the network's history, netting 4.1 million viewers.

"Eureka" topped the night on cable in overall viewers, adults 18-49 and 25-54. It posted a 1.3 national rating/4 share in 18-49 (1.7 million) and a 1.6/4 in 25-54 (1.9 million).

Premiere bested the debut of ABC's "The One" in total viewers and key demos and outscored the season opener of ESPN's "The Contender" and a new episode of FX's "Rescue Me" in overall viewership.

Focused on a sheriff who stumbles into a small town of government-employed geniuses, "Eureka" is Sci Fi's first original drama not set in outer space. Cabler has already ordered a pair of other Earth-based hourlongs -- "Dresden Files" and "Painkiller Jane" -- in an ongoing effort to broaden the appeal and perception of the net.

Sci Fi produces "Eureka" in association with NBC Universal TV Studio.
