Stephen Frears' 'The Queen,' starring Helen Mirren as Elizabeth II, will open the New York Film Festival.

The North American preem of "The Queen," the latest pic from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" helmer Stephen Frears, will open the New York Film Festival on Sept. 29 at Lincoln Center.

The film centers on the royals just after the death of Princess Diana in 1997, and Disney specialty arm Miramax Films is planning an October rollout.

Helen Mirren stars as Queen Elizabeth II, with James Cromwell as Prince Philip and Michael Sheen as Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Miramax sees the film as a potential awards season contender. Fest kicked off last year with George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck," which went on to a Oscar nomination for best pic.

Miramax topper Daniel Battsek said the New York fest slot will "bring the film to the attention of a wide variety of people, which sets it up in a way that (the company) can build on" when it's released.

Scott Rudin exec produced the pic along with Pathe managing director Francois Ivernel and deputy managing director Cameron McCracken. Andy Harries, Christine Langan and Tracey Seaward produced, and Peter Morgan penned the script.

Move marks Frears' second time screening at the fest: His Roddy Doyle adaptation "The Snapper" screened there in 1993.

Picks for the 44th annual New York Film Festival are being made by selection committee chair Richard Pena, along with Kent Jones, Phillip Lopate, John Powers and Lisa Schwarzbaum.

Fest runs Sept. 29-Oct. 15.
