'Evil Dead' finds new life on stage

Sam Raimi's cult horror pic "The Evil Dead" will receive the tuner treatment this fall, with "Evil Dead: The Musical" beginning perfs Off Broadway Oct. 2 for a Nov. 1 opening at New World Stages.

Production hopes to capitalize on midnight B-movie associations by offering perfs at 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, along with evening curtain times Monday through Saturday. Front rows of the auditorium will be labeled "Splatter Zone."

Gory story follows a group of friends who take a trip to a secluded cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force that turn most of them into zombies. The 1981 gross-out movie was the first of an increasingly tongue-in-cheek trilogy ("Evil Dead II," "Army of Darkness").

Created by Canuck team of George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, the show is co-directed by Bond and Rialto vet Hinton Battle ("Miss Saigon"). Battle, who choreographed the upcoming Outkast movie musical "Idlewild," also choreographs the show.

"Evil Dead: The Musical" was workshopped in Toronto and played at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal in 2004. Fest is one of the presenters of the Gotham incarnation, which is also produced by Jenkay and Jeffrey Latimer Entertainment.
