Kadokawa to remake Kurosawa's Sanjuro

Morita to helm Oda in Mifune role

TOKYO -- Producer Haruki Kadokawa (Yanato) will remake "Sanjuro," the 1962 samurai swashbuckler helmed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune.

The remake will star Yuji Oda, who headlined the hit "Bayside Shakedown" cop thriller films. The helmer will be veteran Yoshimitsu Morita.

Principal photography is skedded to start in mid-September in Japan, with Toho to distrib in 2007.

Morita commented that "Heroes change with the time. Oda is the only one in this era who could play this role."

The sequel to the Kurosawa classic "Yojimbo," "Sanjuro" (Japanese title: Tsubaki Sanjuro) stars Mifune as a lone warrior who helps a group of bumbling samurai win comically rough justice against a corrupt official and his henchmen.

Kadokawa, one of the most successful Japanese producers of the 1970s and 1980s, made a smashing comeback late last year with the WWII epic "Yamato." Kadokawa is also producing "The Blue Wolf -- to the Ends of the Earth and Sea," a biopic of Genghis Khan.
