'Pirates' cruises into weekday record book

Disney blockbuster breaks another record Monday

A record-setting wind continued to fill the sails of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" on Monday, indicating the pic could show strong (sea) legs after its boffo bow.

Disney's swashbuckling sequel grossed $18.1 million Monday, shattering the previous nonholiday Monday benchmark of $14.4 million set by "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" last year.

Decline from Sunday to Monday was less than 50% -- more in line with the original "Pirates," which ultimately made more than six times its opening gross, than with blockbusters such as "Spider-Man 2" and "X-Men: The Last Stand," which declined 57% and 64%, respectively, the day after their opening weekends.

If the pic's legs remain steady, it could become one of the top domestic grossers ever, possibly approaching or even passing the $500 million mark. Biggest domestic cume ever was "Titanic's" $600 million.

Monday gross brings the domestic haul to $153.8 million in just four days. Combined with an extra $6 million Monday from seven foreign markets, worldwide take is already $205.6 million.

Four-day domestic cume is the second biggest ever, behind only that of "Sith," which bowed on a Thursday.

"Dead Man's Chest" already has the third biggest single-week gross in history. If trends continue, it has a good shot at breaking the single-week record of $192.1 million set by "Spider-Man 2."
