ROME -- It's official: David Lynch will receive the Golden Lion for career achievement from the Venice Intl. Film Festival, where his mystery "Inland Empire" will world preem Sept. 6, out-of-competition.

The fest had previously confirmed reports that it intended to Lionize Lynch (Daily Variety, June 15), but had been waiting for the U.S. helmer to accept before issuing a formal announcement.

"Lynch has a fascination for what is usually unseen: for mysterious beauty, of the kind that appears in strange places and sometimes turns out to be horrific," Venice artistic topper Marco Muller said on Friday.

"Inland Empire," set in Southern California, but largely shot in Poland, is produced by Gaul's StudioCanal. Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons and Harry Dean Stanton star.

Pic will unspool as a gala in the Palazzo del Cinema, the Lido's main screening venue.

The 63rd Venice fest will run Aug. 30-Sept. 9.
