Pic, set to begin shooting in Venice in late October, will be directed by Gregor von Bismarck. Greg Pruss penned the adaptation.
Storyline revolves around an American industrial diver who has a strange premonition that comes true when he discovers a submerged church in Venice that no one knows about. Church holds a dangerous secret that brings him into contact with an otherworldly woman.
Liman is producing through his company Hypnotic, while Di Novi will produce through Di Novi Pictures.
Di Novi was initially set to produce "Vaporetto" for Warner Bros. Pictures, where she has a first-look deal. When the studio put the project into turnaround, Liman, who is producing through his company Dutch Oven, and Di Novi decided to partner.
Liman approached von Bismarck, whom he met at USC.
"I loved his short films and always wanted to work with him. His vision for 'Vaporetto' is really unique, a kind of 'Trainspotting' meets Fellini set in decaying Venice," Liman said.
CAA's indie unit is repping the project.
Liman is currently shooting "Jumper," which is being produced by Lucas Foster, Simon Kinberg and Jay Sanders.
Liman's directing credits include "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and "The Bourne Identity," which he also produced.
Di Novi produced Curtis Hanson's upcoming "Lucky You" for Warners. Gambling pic, starring Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall, unspools in September.
