Pic nabs $104 mil worldwide cume after five days
The first foreign results -- which boosted worldwide cume after five days to $104 million -- showed solid rather than spectacular performance for Warner's pricey tentpole. "Superman Returns" finished first in all 11 markets, topping "Batman Returns" in 10 and "X-Men: The Last Stand" in seven.
"Superman Returns" took in its best numbers in South Korea with $5 million at 274 playdates, including previews as the five-day total topped "X-Men 3" by 2%. Four-day Australian cume totaled $3.9 million at 409, 29% above "Batman Begins."
In the Philippines, "Superman Returns" ranked as the second-best opening of all time after "Spider-Man 2" with $2.58 million at 81. Pic captured 90% of the market and grossed 85% of "Spider-Man 2."
Taiwan opened with $1.58 million at 151 engagements, followed by Thailand with $1.5 million at 204 and India with $1.49 million at 274, topping local hit "Krissh." Singapore took in $1.16 million at 73, followed by Malaysia with $821,000 at 75, Indonesia with $731,000 at 55, Puerto Rico with $634,000 at 73 and New Zealand with $375,000 at 81.
Warner has decided to hold off "Superman Returns" in many foreign markets until after the World Cup ends next Sunday.
UIP reported "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" took in $6 million at 1,665 playdates in 20 markets during the weekend, pushing the foreign cume to $24 million. It also saw "The Break-Up" gross $3.2 million at 1,026 in 14 territories for an international total of $18 million.
