C4 reassures on pic web relaunch

Free service to begin on July 23

LONDON -- The topper of Channel 4, Blighty's commercially funded pubcaster, says its decision to relaunch pay movie web FilmFour as a free service monikered Film4 on July 23 will not affect its scheduling.

"Film4 will continue to act as an editor of choice for its viewers, selecting its schedules on the basis of quality as well as box office appeal and helping the audience get under the skin of the film industry," said C4 director of TV Kevin Lygo.

"Increasing Film4's distribution and making it freely available will help maintain and protect Channel 4's stake in British film for the next 25 years."

Film4, available on all major U.K. digital platforms, will screen six films per day between 3 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Launch highlights include "Lost in Translation" and "The Motorcycle Diaries," co-funded by C4 production arm FilmFour.

Launch campaign features a short helmed by Kevin Spacey starring British thesps Judi Dench and Ray Winstone.
