'Bucket' brigade

Duo to star in Reiner-helmed pic

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are committed to star in "The Bucket List."

Rob Reiner will direct, and a studio deal will be finalized within the next week.

Scripted by Justin Zackham, "The Bucket List" refers to a wish list that two terminally ill men try to fulfill before each kicks the bucket. After they break out of a cancer ward, they head off on a road trip with an itinerary that includes racing cars, eating giant plates of caviar and slinging poker chips in Monte Carlo.

Pic will be produced by Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and Alan Greisman. Zackham will exec produce.

Script originated through Zadan/Meron Prods., where the pic's exec producer, Travis Knox, brought it in and sent it to Reiner. The director then sent the script to Freeman, who signed on and suggested Nicholson as his traveling partner.

Reiner, who teamed with Nicholson on "A Few Good Men," called the actor, and while Nicholson has been passing on many projects, he said yes to this one.

Pic is eyeing an October production start, with deals and budget to be worked out once the studio has been locked in.
