Terrence Malick and Ed Pressman's Sunflower Prods. have tapped Brian Presley to topline Texan family saga "The Marfa Lights." Sunflower is producing with Presley's Freedom Films and Burnt Orange Prods.
Carlos Carrera ("The Crime of Father Amaro") will direct the coming-of-age pic, which is loosely based on 18th-century French author George Sand's tome "Le Petite Fadette." Julian Goldberger, who wrote and directed "The Hawk Is Dying," will pen the screenplay.
Set in Marfa, Texas, storyline revolves around twin brothers -- one of whom smuggles illegal immigrants over the border, while the other has just returned from fighting in Iraq -- vying for the attention of a Mexican
curandera, or shaman. They also are in conflict with their father, who demands they continue running the family ranch.
Producers are Malick, Pressman, Will Wallace, also with Sunflower, Brunt Orange's Carolyn Pfeiffer and Tom Schatz. Presley also is a producer. Freedom Films' director of development, Lisa Kearns, will co-produce.
Presley next will be seen in Irwin Winkler's Iraqi war drama "Home of the Brave," which MGM will release in December. He also stars in Lionsgate's upcoming "Borderland" and "Eddy."
