Pic will likely be filmed half in English and half in French, with appropriate subtitles.
"Malavita" tells the story of an American mob boss in the Witness Protection Program who's hiding with his family in the Normandy region of France. The FBI cannot control him from imposing his will on the small, unsuspecting town he lives in.
Caleo was hired when he pitched his take on the movie to Besson.
"The book focused more on the fish-out-of-water tale, but the movie will focus more on the manhunt for Giovanni Manzoni (the main character), and how he rose through the ranks to become who he is," Caleo told Daily Variety.
Producing are EuropaCorp's Besson and Pierre-Ange La Pogam.
Caleo, whose credits include "Rescue Me," is in post-production on "The Last Time," his directorial debut from his own script.
Besson recently wrote, directed and produced "Angel-A," which will be released this year in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics. He also helmed and produced the upcoming live-action/CG-animated pic "Arthur and the Minimoys," based on the kids book he wrote.
