"Smart" centers on the magazine powerhouse whose life was almost entirely consumed by his germ phobia. He and a circle of colleagues created a long string of classroom instructional films on health and hygiene. Meanwhile, he led an unorthodox personal life and was known for his womanizing and affinity for shirtless photos of himself.
Charlie Peters penned the screenplay.
Lucas will star as a fictional FBI investigator who infiltrates Smart's world. Title character has not yet been cast.
Nash Entertainment developed and guided the project through early development. Bruce Nash is producing along with Robert Kosberg, head of Nash's film department. Peters will get co-producer credit.
"Smart was such a true eccentric, in the vein of Howard Hughes and other period-type personalities," Lucas told Daily Variety.
"Smart" marks the first producing project for 2 Bridges Prods. For his Gotham-based banner, Lucas will work alongside Devon Maurer, his brother and creative partner.
Earlier this spring, Lucas signed on to play a fictional journalist in the untitled thriller inspired by the Bernard-Henri Levy book "Who Killed Daniel Pearl?" The film, directed by Kip Williams, is scheduled to start production this fall.Lucas, who just signed with CAA, continues to be repped by 3 Arts Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof & Fishman.
Nash Entertainment film slate includes "Santa Paws" with Vanguard Entertainment and "Time of Their Lives" at Universal, among others.
