Voom blooms in S. Korea TV deal

Rainbow finds haven in Skylife

A barrage of U.S.-made docs and lifestyle programming made in high-def is coming to Korea via a deal put together by Rainbow Media.

Rainbow has agreed to supply Korea's satcaster Skylife with programming drawn from five of its Voom network brands. The programming will air on Korea's only high-def service, called Sky HD.

The daily primetime two-hour block will feature Voom HD brands Ultra, Rush, Equator, GamePlay and Monsters throughout the week.

The two-year deal, which will involve almost 400 hours of programming, will be unveiled todayby Voom's general manager Greg Moyer and Sky HD prexy Keum Pyo Hong. No pricetag for the deal was available.

The primetime blocks will begin airing in the fall, reaching 2 million households throughout Korea.

"Sky HD is providing us with the opportunity to introduce Korean TV audiences to the beauty of high-def programming while extending the reach and impact of Voom HD Networks," Moyer said.

He said Voom programming is distributed in 50 countries.

Ultra focuses on lifestyle and fashion; Rush on adventure sports; Equator on exotic destinations; GamePlay on virtual videogames; and Monsters on movie horror.

"Our audience is hungry for this type of high-def programming, spanning docs, fashion, sports and entertainment," Sky HD's Hong said.

SkyLife is the sole digital satcaster in Korea, providing 170 specialized channels; Sky HD is a 24-hour channel, the third to be introduced in the world following Japan and the U.S.

Voom's high-def channels, which are available locally on Echostar, are being licensed globally by parent Rainbow Media. Cablevision is the owner of Rainbow Media.
