Broadcasters including the BBC, ITV and Turner Broadcasting Systems are involved in a six-month mobile TV trial using technology that will be rolled out in Germany for the soccer World Cup, which starts Friday.

BBC News 24, ITV's interactive games channel ITV Play and the Turner-owned Cartoon Network are all involved in the experiment, which uses the same spectrum as digital radio in the U.K.

Trial is being carried out with Samsung and LG Electronics, already in use in South Korea, and the Korean Ministry for Information & Communication, among others.

Six channels will be available on handsets.

Trial follows two U.K. experiments to test the market for mobile TV in Blighty.

Backers claim the digital audio broadcasting (DAB) technology has the edge over rival standard DVB-H because the spectrum is already available.

DVB-H is unlikely to be available until digital switchover in 2012.
