Variety sets photo outfit

Publication launches Variety Images

For the first time in its 100-year history, Variety is creating a photo division, Variety Images, with Bruce Brosnan as general manager.

Variety Images will shoot entertainment events and personalities around the world, including premieres, award shows, concerts and theater openings. It will build an entertainment library, with photos now available for licensing at Varietyimages.com.

Before Variety was bought by Reed in 1987, it ran photos only on extremely rare occasions (e.g., the Oscars). Since then, under editor-in-chief Peter Bart, the paper has increasingly made photos a key part of its coverage.

"Shooting entertainment images is an obvious next step for Variety," Brosnan said. "We live in a world where visuals play an increasingly important role -- especially entertainment images."

After years of licensing photos from news agencies, the creation of a photo unit was the next logical step, Brosnan said.

He has been with the paper for more than 20 years, most recently as art director.
