'Da Vinci' wins int'l weekend

Wolverine and his fellow X-Men were beaten on the international front by Sony's 'The Da Vinci Code.'

"X-Men: The Last Stand" dominated the U.S. box office with an estimated $107 million at 3,690 playdates during its Friday-Sunday opening -- the second-best Friday-Sunday launch of all time.

Fox's third "X-Men" trailed only the May 2004 opening of "Spider-Man 2," which grossed $115 million. "Shrek 2," which opened on a Wednesday, and "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," which launched on a Thursday, both grossed $108 million during their first Friday-Sunday.

Sony's second weekend of "The Da Vinci Code" appeared to have won the weekend on the international side, although Fox did not issue international estimates after opening the film at over 10,000 sites.

Sony estimated "Code" grossed $92.8 million on 12,038 screens in 82 markets, as the thriller declined only 40% from its record-breaking launch weekend. Foreign cume has hit $320 million and worldwide cume has gone past $450 million.

Sony estimated "X-Men: The Last Stand" had won in about six of the top 20 markets -- U.K., France, Australia, Mexico, Russia and Brazil. "Code" posted its top grosses in Germany, with a 13% decline to $11.6 million and in Japan with a 19% slide to $9.15 million.
