Verdicts bring 'Smart' move
Docu may be re-released following verdicts
"We may now take a stab at a few more theaters," Eamonn Bowles, prexy of doc's U.S. distributor Magnolia, said shortly after the verdicts were handed down May 25.
Among the markets being considered, not surprisingly, is Enron's former home, Houston. The Alex Gibney-helmed doc about the corporation's implosion had its best B.O. perf there.
Originally released last April, the doc took in a healthy $4 million. But, Bowles notes, "When we opened it, there was nothing going on in the trial."
The DVD was released in January, but when Lay and Skilling's trial started that month, Magnolia put the pic back into Houston theaters. One reason, Bowles said, was for the benefit of the media in town to cover the proceedings.
Box office wasn't huge because, Bowles says, "We comped a ton of press people."
