"Hustle & Flow" director Craig Brewer will stick with Paramount for his next project, "Maggie Lynn," a country-music drama that he'll write and direct. Stephanie Allain and John Singleton will produce.
Brewer just wrapped drama "Black Snake Moan," starring Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci and Justin Timberlake. That film will be distributed via Paramount Vantage; as Par Classics, banner released "Hustle & Flow." Brewer cited his experience working with Par exec Pam Abdy on the film as a prime reason he wanted to make his next at the studio.
"Maggie Lynn" follows a woman who gets her heart broken and achieves a sense of self-worth by returning home to Tennessee, where she teams with her older brother to play country music in honkytonks.
Brewer plans to explore different music genres from his home state in each film he makes. After tackling Memphis rap last time and the blues in "Black Snake Moan," he wanted to make a blue-collar C&W film in the spirit of "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "Urban Cowboy."
Brewer said he wanted to keep the same team intact with Singleton and Allain, the latter of whom became his partner in Southern Cross the Dog Prods. Also returning is Scott Bomar, who scored both "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan." Brewer hopes to be in production before the year is out.
