Sunday floats WB's boat

'Poseidon' brings in $22.2 mil

Turns out "Poseidon" didn't sink quite as deeply as Warner Bros. initially believed.

Final grosses for the weekend revealed a better-than-expected Sunday, with the tentpole remake grossing $22.2 million.

While still very disappointing, the figure is about 9% more than initial estimates based on Friday and Saturday grosses.

Sunday was a better day than most studios predicted, as numerous pics beat their estimates.

"RV" ended up grossing $10 million, making its weekend-to-weekend drop an astonishingly small 10% -- lower than the already impressive 14% Sony reported Sunday.

"Akeelah and the Bee" also gained some crucial momentum as Sunday grosses vaulted it from outside the top 10 to No. 9. Final weekend take was $2.4 million, 20% more than Lionsgate had estimated, giving it a modest 29% drop for the frame.

That's particularly notable since "Akeelah" was on 1,000 more playdates last week and upped its per-theater average by about a third, to $2,044, this frame.
