Ellis running 'Asylum'

Director takes hold of Hyde Park pic

Helmer David R. Ellis ("Snakes on a Plane") will direct "Asylum" for Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment, which is producing and fully financing the pic.

Film is set to start lensing later this year.

Based on a script by Ethan Lawrence, story is about a group of college freshmen who learn that their dorm was once a notorious asylum.

Producers are Amritraj and Hyde Park exec VP Jessika Borsiczky.

Hyde Park's international sales arm is expected to shop the project to foreign buyers at Cannes.

Hyde Park recently announced it is financing and producing helmer James Wan's "Death Sentence" through its first-look, five-year deal with 20th Century Fox. Hyde Park also has a second-look deal with Disney.

Amritraj's company is in post on Sandra Bullock starrer "Premonition," which will be released through TriStar Pictures.

"Snakes on a Plane" opens through New Line on Aug. 18. Ellis, who was a stuntman before turning to directing, also helmed "Final Destination 2" and "Cellular."
