Sony snags pretty pitch

Studio, Avenue to make 'Beautiful' Ephron pic

Sony has bought the Delia Ephron pitch "Beautiful" for Cary Brokaw's Avenue Pictures shingle to produce. Ephron will write the screenplay.

Pic is based on an idea by Brokaw that he developed with Ephron, about a high-powered woman in the world of fashion whose vanity jeopardizes everything she holds dear.

Brokaw is producing. Avenue Pictures VP of production Aaron Geller will exec produce.

Brokaw describes the pic as a "psychological thriller loosely inspired by 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' "

"It's not as extreme as 'Fatal Attraction,' but it's spooky," he told Daily Variety. "I sat down with Delia and we worked through the story, spinning out different variations, and we realized it was much more interesting as a thriller. It's about the extremes to which people, particularly women, go to, and the pressure on appearance."

Brokaw last partnered with Sony on "Closer," directed by Mike Nichols. He's about to start shooting "Sex and Death 101" starring Simon Baker. At Sony he's also developing "The Grays," based on the treatment by Ken Nolan for which Sony paid $3 million.

Delia Ephron wrote Sony's "Bewitched" with her sister Nora Ephron, who directed the pic. At Sony she's also developing "Sammy," with Reese Witherspoon attached.
