MacIvor puts lens cap on kamera
Artistic director: Best to disband while we were on top of our game
MacIvor and producer Sherrie Johnson have run the Toronto-based experimental theater group with great success, usually as a showcase for MacIvor's own groundbreaking one-man shows.
"Sherrie and I decided that it would be best to disband while we were on top of our game rather than wait around until we had become weary of the grueling touring schedule," MacIvor says.
It is anticipated that MacIvor will shift some of his focus to film, in which he has been working increasingly over the past few years, directing, writing and starring in the features "Past Perfect" and "Wilby Wonderful." "A Beautiful View," a play written and directed by MacIvor and starring two other longtime collaborators, Caroline Gillis and Tracy Wright, will mark the final new production from da da kamera.
Show premiered at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, in February, toured to the Great Canadian Theater Company in Ottawa in April and will open May 10 at Buddies in Bad Times Theater in Toronto. It will be seen at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., starting May 29.
The work that MacIvor and Johnson did with da da kamera was characterized, in their words, by "a focus on creation, placing no limits on the time it takes for a project's development." Shows like "Monster," "In on It" and "Cul de Sac" spent several years in development and then continued to evolve over lengthy international tours. Da da kamera's projects have been seen throughout North America and Europe as well as in Australia and Israel.
MacIvor won an Obie for the October 2001 run of "In on It" at New York's P.S. 122.
Having served as MacIvor's unofficial theatrical home, Buddies in Bad Times is offering the 43-year-old Nova Scotian an appropriate end to this period in his career.The theater will revive three of MacIvor's acclaimed solo shows in collaboration with writer-helmer Daniel Brooks, starting Sept. 19 with "Here Lies Henry" and continuing through April 1, 2007, with "House" and "Monster."
