But Magnolia Pictures prexy Eamonn Bowles might be the only indie distributor whose band has an active MySpace presence.
A music fan all his life, Bowles became a cineaste in college and pursued a career in film.
In the mid '90s, Bowles decided he had enough leisure time to put a band together, and with friends Daniel Rey, Roger Murdock and Dave Rick, the Martinets were born.
The Martinets were influenced by groups from the late '70s and early '80s including the New York Dolls, the Heartbreakers and the Clash as well as early Who.
The band has made two albums and is prepping to shop a third to labels. Besides local gigs, the band has performed at SXSW a number of times, but Bowles is happy keep it a hobby.
"It's the best effort-reward ratio -- we have no one to please except ourselves," he says. "We do what we want when we want."
Bowles, who provides vocals and plays guitar, can't say for sure how his artistic nature has shaped him as a distributor, but the indie music scene has definitely pigeonholed him: "I get pitched a lot of rock pictures of varying quality."
