HOLLYWOOD -- In every artist's childhood, there are two things you can count on: "drawing mean pictures and getting beaten up," scripter Dan Clowes said at a screening of his semiautobiographical "Art School Confidential" April 11 at the Harmony Gold Preview House.

Clowes drew inspiration from attending Brooklyn's Pratt Institute during "the pre-Giuliani era, with the highest murder rate in the history of New York," he said. "Every time you left the house you faced threatening guys with knives, so there was this charge just walking down the street with your stupid sculpture. Like having to defend your art to the locals."

And the finished product? "Watching it was like making other people watch my twisted psyche projected on the screen."
