Iacono will report to motion picture group chairman Gareth Wigan. He will work with Wigan in overseeing the studio's local-language feature film development and production around the world.
Sony Pictures has produced 20 local-language films to date and expects future growth in Russia and India.
For the past six years, Iacono has been exec VP of distribution for Sony Pictures Television Intl., managing and directing distribution operations for international TV licensing and domestic pay television.
"In the past, Peter has been responsible for bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue through licensing deals on behalf of Sony Pictures Television Intl.," said Wigan. "As he makes the transition from television to film, he will be working to help us create original motion-picture content that we can ultimately market and distribute in all media worldwide."
Before Sony, Iacono held a strategic management position with Warner Bros., where he was involved in the development of business plans for the WB Network, Warner's Interactive Group and the Warner Stores retail chain.
